Calligraphy creates a unique rhythm with every stroke, while design breaks down, rearranges, and transforms written forms for use in images, installations, branding, and digital media. Both focus on the visual form of writing and explore how it can continue, change, and find new life in the age of technology.
Variations and Dialogues in Writing: Calligraphy Meets Design is organized around three themes: “Variations in Form and Meaning,” “Reflections in Text,” and “Interpreting the Written Image.” The exhibition brings together artists and designers of different generations from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao, China, Japan, and Korea. Using media ranging from ink, seal carving, oil painting, and printmaking to enamel, mosaic, paint on metal sheets, and digital animation, they break down and reinterpret the strokes, structures, and meanings of Chinese characters.
When the unique nature of calligraphy meets the reproducibility of design, writing takes on new forms between tradition and innovation, and between the abstract and the figurative. The exhibition reveals the changing and renewing energy of the written word.
