/// From a Century-Old Market to a Future Market ///

Tainan West Market, locally known as Tuā-tshài-tshī (the Grand Market), was the largest trading hub for food and textiles in Tainan for a century. For the 2024 Taiwan Design Expo, the “Market Making in Tainan” exhibition will be held at the newly restored Tainan West Market. From exploration to creation, the action from tracing origins to design not only shapes a new image of Tainan’s food and clothing, but also envisions future consumer trends.

/// Exploring Tainan — Pre-Exhibition Research ///

“Market Making in Tainan” focuses on Tainan's food and textiles. Creators traveled across Tainan — from coastlines, through plains, to hills — exploring local specialties like mangoes, lotus roots, and milkfish, while documenting the textile practices, including spinning, weaving, and finishing.

/// Market Making — Post-Exhibition Process ///

South Food / Fabric Project (SFP)

The term “造市場” (Market Making) not only echoes the scenes of visiting markets in Minnan dialect, but also implies design thinking and creation. Through the journey of exploring Tainan, the team distilled creative energy, supported by local resources and craftsmanship. They propose new perspectives in food and fashion, creating a temporary “SFP” virtual Tainan brand in the historic West Market, allowing cultural consumption to circulate and presenting visions for future urban living.

InFormat Design Curating

Putting the principles of curation and the disciplines of workflow implementation in high regard, Informat Design Curating aspires to forge new design approaches. To address different requirements and needs for each project, we seek "appropriate" solutions by first conducting thorough research and analysis to establish a strategic approach. We then devise a design plan that incorporate professional visual and spatial teams, and blend innovation with expertise to deliver top-quality design outcomes.

Taiwan Culinary Arts Association

The Taiwan Culinary Arts Association is committed to encouraging more people to explore and appreciate Taiwanese ingredients from a modern industry perspective. By "modern," we mean a mindful and refined approach to dining. As food culture increasingly becomes a form of national soft power, it mirrors the evolving local lifestyles and patterns. The act of dining is in fact a palimpsest with a multitude of social, economic and cultural meanings. The association's mission is to find expressions for and make a ceremony out of food appreciation, thereby enriching Taiwan's culinary heritage. In addition to gathering, distributing and promoting Taiwanese culinary knowledge, the association seeks to establish a robust discourse on Taiwanese cuisine and support industry advancements. It also offers food education and taste refinement courses, facilitates professional knowledge transfer, and creates exchange platforms to boost public awareness and elevate the international visibility of Taiwan's culinary culture.

OQLIQ ENTERPRISE Co., Ltd.

oqLiq is a fashion brand that has been deeply rooted in Tainan for over a decade. In its early days, the brand's journey began by locating hidden craftsmen in the city's alleys through the sounds of their machinery. Building connections with artisans one by one from one street to another, they gathered lost pieces of a once-vibrant local industry. Tainan was once home to an impressive industrial chain, with globally renowned manufacturers which chose to keep a low profile instead. Few realize that a single garment on the shelf might have passed through more than a hundred hands during its production. Driven by the enthusiasm for fashion, oqLiq seeks to fuse the cultural essence they've absorbed throughout their lives with the local industry, and proudly presents a feast of the latest fashion.
