/// From a Century-Old Market to a Future Market ///
Tainan West Market, locally known as Tuā-tshài-tshī (the Grand Market), was the largest trading hub for food and textiles in Tainan for a century. For the 2024 Taiwan Design Expo, the “Market Making in Tainan” exhibition will be held at the newly restored Tainan West Market. From exploration to creation, the action from tracing origins to design not only shapes a new image of Tainan’s food and clothing, but also envisions future consumer trends.
/// Exploring Tainan — Pre-Exhibition Research ///
“Market Making in Tainan” focuses on Tainan's food and textiles. Creators traveled across Tainan — from coastlines, through plains, to hills — exploring local specialties like mangoes, lotus roots, and milkfish, while documenting the textile practices, including spinning, weaving, and finishing.

South Food / Fabric Project (SFP)
The term “造市場” (Market Making) not only echoes the scenes of visiting markets in Minnan dialect, but also implies design thinking and creation. Through the journey of exploring Tainan, the team distilled creative energy, supported by local resources and craftsmanship. They propose new perspectives in food and fashion, creating a temporary “SFP” virtual Tainan brand in the historic West Market, allowing cultural consumption to circulate and presenting visions for future urban living.
